Appreciation Process (CMAP) is a process designed to assist section commanders in a combat situation with their decision making that ultimately leads them to being able to complete their mission and keep their section members safe. The Australian Army (Land Warfare Centre) and VMP eLearning collaborated on producing a course based around a series of scenarios that allowed future Section Commanders and other Commanding Officers to understand the process of the CMAP in a controlled environment. This allowed the users to learn from their mistakes safely but gave them the tools and the knowledge surrounding the CMAP should they ever need to use it in a live situation. The lesson involved a variety of interactive content, quizzes, animations, and video scenarios, and was produced using Articulate Storyline for enhanced gamification. All SME’s involved in the course had used the CMAP in a real combat situation previously, so their knowledge and real-world experience allowed VMP eLearning to produce content that had real impact on the students who had never been deployed in a combat situation. People making decisions via the CMAP are often doing it under pressure, with time constraints and in positions of considerable danger, therefore creating a safe environment in which people can learn and understand was pivotal to the success of the module and the student’s success on the battlefield should they ever need to use it.
